Cracked or damaged siding repaired and made ready for paint, so sun and water stay out.
Highpoint Painting offers siding repair in Tucson. A repair usually makes sense when damage stays on a few boards or one wall. If soft, rotted or loose siding shows up all around the house, a bigger fix may be needed. Painting over damaged siding only hides the problem for a short time.
Wood siding that feels soft when you press a screwdriver into it has rot. It needs to be replaced, not painted. Walk around the house and look low first. The bottom rows near soil, sprinklers and downspouts fail most. Other signs to watch for: boards that crack, warp or pull away from the wall, gaps at seams and corners, nails backing out, holes from insects or birds, and paint that blisters in one spot while the rest looks fine. That last sign is a big one. It often means water is getting in behind the boards.
If damage stays on a few boards, swapping those boards is usually the smart move. Widespread rot, or water damage on the wall behind the siding, points to a bigger job. Matching is the hard part of a small repair. Siding comes in many profiles and widths. Older profiles can be hard to find, so a patch may need boards taken from a hidden wall or a close match. Paint is what blends the new boards in. That is why repair and repaint so often go together.
Most siding damage starts with water getting behind it. Common entry points are failed caulk around windows and doors, open seams, cracked paint on the board ends, and siding that touches dirt or mulch. Sprinklers that spray the wall every day keep the bottom boards wet. Fiber cement siding does not rot like wood. It can still crack, and its cut edges soak up water if they were never sealed or painted. Fixing the board without fixing the water source means the damage comes back.
Small siding repairs often do not need a permit, but replacing large sections can, depending on your city. Rules differ from one town to the next, so call your local building department if the job is big. HOAs may also have rules on siding type and color. Highpoint Painting is a Licensed Arizona contractor, ROC #353460.
New boards and bare wood need primer and paint soon after they go up. Unpainted wood soaks up water and starts to break down. Fresh paint also seals the seams and nail heads. Our exterior painting page explains what makes outside paint last.
